Vasco Vieira de Almeida Foundation launches "Arquivo ou Caleidoscópio" exhibition

22 May, 2024

The Vasco Vieira de Almeida Foundation is launching the contemporary art exhibition "Arquivo ou Caleidoscópio" ("Archive or Kaleidoscope?") by Nuno Nunes-Ferreira, and curated by Verónica de Mello, on 22 May at VdA's offices.

In the year of the 50th anniversary of the 25 April Revolution, the exhibition reveals the artist's historical archive, presenting works that document this crucial moment in Portugal's history.

The artworks that the artist has built up over decades of research and classification reflect a research method that characterises his way of working and thinking. From an early age, Nunes-Ferreira became interested in collecting documents, photographs and other elements in his intense pursuit of understanding reality. An organised and free society will always seek to preserve the documents that bear witness to its history, so the existence of an archive of events becomes an essential documentary source for a fuller and broader understanding of the historical, cultural and social development of a nation. In the year in which the 50th anniversary of the 25 April Revolution is being celebrated, this historical archive created by the artist Nuno Nunes-Ferreira is of the utmost importance, as it presents itself as an archive whose foundations are the documentation of a date that would change the history of Portugal, and would become a symbol of freedom and also of contemporary Portugal. And it is in this sense that the exhibition "Archive or Kaleidoscope?" is organised in the building that houses the Vasco Viera da Almeida Foundation Collection in Lisbon.

The exhibition is part of the official ARCO'24 programme.
