The Professor Francisco Vieira de Almeida Award

Disseminating knowledge and science is essential for building a more open, engaged and inclusive society. With this in mind, the Vasco Vieira de Almeida Foundation, in partnership with the University of Lisbon and its School of Arts and Humanities (FLUL), aims to promote research and advance knowledge and innovation across various fields of the humanities.

The Professor Francisco Vieira de Almeida Award, which was established in honour of Professor Francisco Vieira de Almeida, recognises outstanding academic work in various fields of the humanities and identifies new talent, thereby reinforcing the excellence and societal impact of research.

The award is presented every two years and is currently in its 4th edition. The deadline for submitting applications is 31 July 2026.

Rules & Regulations

Eligibility

The Professor Francisco Vieira de Almeida Award is open to applications from undergraduate, Master’s and PhD degree holders, as well as postdoctoral researchers, from the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon, within five years of the completion of their academic degree or the end of their postdoctoral researcher status.

Theme

Scientific and/or research papers focusing on any field within the humanities are eligible.

The prize

The amount of the prize is €20,000, to which a maximum sum of €6,000 will be added as a contribution towards the publishing expenses of the award-winning paper.
