The Foundation

Origin

The Vasco Vieira de Almeida Foundation was established on 13 December 2016 by Vieira de Almeida & Associados – Sociedade de Advogados SP RL (VdA) with a key mission to promote citizenship education and the essential role of education and knowledge in upholding human rights and the rule of law, in line with the active civic, social and cultural engagement of VdA’s founding partner, Vasco Vieira de Almeida, and further reinforcing VdA’s longstanding commitment to social responsibility.

Mission and Goals

The VVA Foundation has as its mission to promote education for citizenship and contribute to the development of a more informed, integrated and inclusive society. The VVA Foundation also aims to increase civic responsibility, using education, knowledge and culture as vehicles to uphold human rights and the rule of law, while steadily affirming its role as an active player in these domains, in Portugal.

Strategic Axes

The Vasco Vieira de Almeida Foundation fulfils its mission through the following strategic axes:

Justice

Fully aware that access to justice and the law is paramount to an effective exercise of citizenship and to social cohesion, the VVA Foundation is determined to strengthen the role lawyers play in facilitating access to justice and protecting social groups at risk, by improving access to legal services by vulnerable citizens and non-profit organisations, as well as supporting innovation and social entrepreneurship.

Education

The VVA Foundation supports education, training and knowledge as tools for personal and collective development, as well as civic engagement.

Human Rights

One of the VVA Foundation’s strategic goals is to act in matters pertaining to human rights, combating all forms of their violation, while simultaneously fostering a collective conscience of the importance of valuing diversity and respecting the rule of law.

Knowledge & Science

The dissemination of knowledge and science is essential to building an open, engaged and inclusive society. The VVA Foundation is determined to deepen the study and understanding of issues relevant to its mission, contributing to the advancement of knowledge and innovation, as well as the dissemination of information within the community, by promoting information sharing networks – all in a bid to encourage greater equality of access to knowledge.

Culture

The advancement of culture in its diverse expressions (notably, musical, artistic and literary) and awareness-raising about the value of cultural diversity and the importance of respect for multiculturalism, are key concerns of the VVA Foundation.

Civil Society

Mechanisms designed to alert civil society must be implemented if active civic participation and mindful social engagement are to be attained, notably, through advocacy on relevant social issues, and by creating and promoting tools for collective participation. The VVA Foundation is determined to play a relevant role in this regard.

Digital Citizenship

In a world profoundly marked by technology and globalisation, the VVA Foundation thinks it important to contribute to a collective consciousness of the challenges the digitalisation of society and the economy pose to the concept of citizenship as we now know it, notably in terms of the protection of privacy, human dignity and freedom itself, in all its expressions.

Sustainability

The VVA Foundation is strongly committed to the development of a collective conscience that upholds the importance of adopting environmentally and socially sustainable practices as part of an active exercise of citizenship and stronger sense of belonging to the community at large.
