What do we need to do to be more inclusive?
Inês Azeredo Caeiro, Executive Director of the Vasco Vieira de Almeida Foundation, has written an article published by Access Lab, a social impact organisation dedicated to promoting accessibility for people with disabilities, neurodivergent individuals and Deaf people, in which she reflects on the question: 'What do we need to do to be more inclusive?'.
Based on the work developed by the Vasco Vieira de Almeida Foundation, she highlights the essential role of organisations in promoting a fairer society, emphasising that inclusion begins with how we create opportunities, uphold rights and perceive difference.
She also highlights the impact of VdA employees’ involvement in volunteering, mentoring and skills-sharing initiatives, which contribute to greater empathy and a deeper understanding of the realities faced by the most vulnerable.
'Many report that, following these experiences, they come to better understand the challenges and capabilities of people with disabilities. They feel better prepared to adopt an attitude of openness and respect for difference, contributing to a culture of inclusion and a renewed perspective on diversity.'
More than providing a definitive answer, the article invites reflection: what, after all, is still needed for us to build a more inclusive society?
