Launch of the 2nd edition of the Professor Francisco Vieira de Almeida Award

The Vasco Vieira de Almeida Foundation and the Faculty of Arts of the University of Lisbon (FLUL) launch the 2nd edition of the Professor Francisco Vieira de Almeida Award, which was established to honour and celebrate the memory of the remarkable citizen and unforgettable Professor of FLUL, who marked the intellectual life of that institution.

This biannual award is open to applications from undergraduate, Master’s and PhD students or graduates, as well as post-doctoral researchers of FLUL, up to five years after the conclusion of their academic degree or the end of their post-doctoral researcher status. It aims at revealing new talents and scientific works in a Humanities field of research, with this edition being devoted to the field of Philosophy. The prize paper is awarded the sum of €20,000, to which up to €5,000 is added for publication costs.

In the first edition of this award, the jury, composed of Vasco Vieira de Almeida, Founding Partner of VdA, Miguel Tamen, FLUL Director, José Pedro Serra, Director of the FLUL Library, António Feijó, Vice-Rector of the University of Lisbon, and José Gil, philosopher and essayist, selected Maria Luísa Resende as the winner. Her paper entitled "The Transmission of Luciano of Samósata in Portugal in the 16th Century" analyses the transmission of Lucian of Samosata’s work in Portugal during the 16th century based on unpublished testimonies. The first part focuses on inventories and sixteenth-century editions on the circulation of the Greek author’s texts in Portugal, the instruments used for their interpretation and the vicissitudes imposed by the inquisitorial censorship. The second part consists in an examination of the Latin version of Jorge Coelho’s “De Dea Syria”, providing a deeper understanding of the pedagogical use of Lucian.
