Teach for Portugal: a movement for transformative education!

19 September, 2019

Teach for Portugal has been officially launched!
Teach for Portugal is a non-profit association, and partner of Teach for All, whose mission is to ensure that all children have access to equal educational opportunities regardless of their socioeconomic background.
This project recruits young professionals and recent graduates with a leadership profile, from different fields, to implement its programme in the country's most disadvantaged schools, for a period of two years. Each young leader is assigned to a school and specific class, providing ongoing classroom-based support in close cooperation with the teaching staff. The goal is to bring energy, enthusiasm and alternative non-formal education methodologies that will make a difference in students' lives by improving their levels of academic achievement and expected future paths in their communities.
The programme starts this September, for the 2019/2020 school year, with the participation of 17 young leaders, who will be distributed among 11 schools in seven cities across northern Portugal, with an estimated impact on 1700 students!
The launch event took place on 17 September, at VdA’s auditorium in Lisbon, and was attended by the group of young leaders who are participating in this 1st edition of the Teach for Portugal programme.
The speakers at this event included Miguel Moreira Rato, President of Teach for Portugal, Alexandre Homem Cristo, columnist for the Observador newspaper, Manuel Oliveira, Director of the Cerco Schools Group, and Margarida Couto, CEO of the Vasco Vieira de Almeida Foundation, representing the diversity of perspectives of those who act in the field of education.
