Zambujal 360
Organised by the Ad Gentes and CAZAmbujal associations, the “Zambujal 360” project has transformed the Zambujal neighbourhood in Amadora into the world’s first social housing estate to become an ambassador for the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Through an Urban Art Gallery comprising 17 gables, each dedicated to a specific SDG, the project aims to enhance the neighbourhood, boost local economic development and foster cultural engagement within the community. With a vision for short-, medium- and long-term transformation, the project is structured around three main pillars:
- Development of local commerce and promotion of sustainable business and tourism;
- Health education and promotion of community well-being;
- Education through art, reinforcing social inclusion and residents’ sense of belonging.
The 17 murals were created by artists of different nationalities and styles in collaboration with the local community. The artists drew inspiration from community members' life stories to depict each SDG. Each mural also received support from leading public and private organisations in Portugal.
The project was launched on 22 October 2025 at a ceremony attended by representatives from the United Nations Regional Information Centre for Western Europe, project partners, the artists involved and local residents. The ceremony celebrated urban art as a tool for social transformation.
The Vasco Vieira de Almeida Foundation is a Zambujal 360 partner organisation, having sponsored the mural dedicated to SDG 16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, created by artists Draw and Alma from the “Ruído” project. As well as providing artistic support, the Foundation contributes to the project by funding the training and development of local guides. These guides accompany visitors through the open-air gallery, sharing the stories and meanings behind each mural.
This partnership aligns with the Vasco Vieira de Almeida Foundation's mission, particularly with regard to promoting culture. Sponsoring the mural dedicated to SDG 16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions is a tangible expression of this commitment, emphasising the connection between art, citizenship and social responsibility. The project also promotes networking, bringing together artists, public and private entities, and the local community around a common goal.
