18 November, 2020

The jury of the Professor Francisco Vieira de Almeida Award, which was launched under a partnership between the Vasco Vieira de Almeida Foundation (VVA Foundation) and the Faculty of Arts of the University of Lisbon (FLUL), has selected the paper entitled "The Transmission of Luciano of Samósata in Portugal in the 16th Century" as the winner of the first edition of this competition, authored by Maria Luísa Resende.

The call for applications for the Award, established in December 2018 in honour of the philosopher and eminent professor of FLUL Francisco Vieira de Almeida, with the aim of revealing new talents and academic works in the field of Humanities, ended on 31 May 2020. Twenty-five papers in the fields of Humanities and Social Sciences were submitted by FLUL undergraduate, Master’s and PhD degree holders or post-doctoral researchers.
The submitted papers were assessed by a jury composed of Vasco Vieira de Almeida, Founding Partner of VdA, Miguel Tamen, Director of FLUL, José Pedro Serra, Director of the FLUL Library, António Feijó, Pro-Rector of the University of Lisbon, and José Gil, philosopher and essayist. In the selection process, the jury took into consideration the criteria of academic quality, consistency of ideas and discourse, literary rigour, research efforts and the presentation of the paper.

The Professor Francisco Vieira de Almeida Award, held every two years, has a value of 20,000 euros, to which a maximum amount of 5,000 euros will be added to cover the costs of the publication of the winning paper, which must be unpublished, by the University of Lisbon Press.

The award ceremony will take place on a date to be announced in due course.
