The Gorongosa Project: “Educating Vulnerable Children” – two schools already equipped!

02 January, 2019

In the context of the cooperation protocol signed with the Gorongosa National Park in February 2017, the Vasco Vieira de Almeida Foundation (“VVA Foundation”) has supported, through VdA Legal Partners, the Project “Educating Vulnerable Children” aimed at improving local school conditions, more concretely by undertaking to equip five schools located in the Park’s Human Development Zone over a period of five years.

This Protocol marked the start of the internationalization of VdA’s Corporate Social Responsibility Programme, which expresses the Firm’s sense of responsibility towards the communities with which it interacts, including in VdA Legal Partners territories.

In the first year, the VVA Foundation’s support to this Project helped train local workers in the carpentry and construction skills necessary to manufacture 100 school desks and chairs to be distributed to two primary schools located in the Park.

These works were completed during 2018, kicking off the renovation of two schools in the Tampão area, proposed by the Gorongosa National Park to benefit from the Project.

The Mecombezi Primary School, located in the Nhamatanda district, has 610 students, 11 teachers and 5 classrooms. Under this Project, the school received 50 school desks and chairs on 6 August 2018.

Located in the same district, the Pungue-Sul Primary School also received 50 school desks and chairs, which on 13 November 2018 were distributed between its 3 classrooms, to be enjoyed by its 401 students and 5 teachers.

The 100 school desks and chairs distributed between these two primary schools will provide better learning conditions for around 1000 students in the community of Tampão, while also raising awareness of the importance of preserving Gorongosa’s biodiversity – thus seamlessly integrating the Project’s social and environmental components.
