Exhibition “Arquivo ou Caleidoscópio?”

Nuno Nunes-Ferreira is a contemporary artist who stands out on the national art scene. His work offers a unique perspective on social and political reality, characterised by a constant endeavour to broaden horizons and challenge the status quo. As part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of Portugal’s Carnation Revolution, the “Arquivo ou Caleidoscópio” (Archive or Kaleidoscope?) exhibition provides a valuable opportunity to consider the challenges of today and tomorrow, and to contextualise the values that underpinned the Revolution.

Through its documentary and visual narrative, the exhibition invites critical reflection and debate on key historical and social themes, establishing a dialogue between the past and contemporary issues. By exploring today's complexities, the exhibition reaffirms the Vasco Vieira de Almeida Foundation's dedication to promoting art as a platform for critical thinking and social change. 

In “Arquivo ou Caleidoscópio”, visitors encounter works developed over decades of research, reflecting the artist’s approach to work and thought. His method involves collecting and classifying various documents, photographs, letters and even X-rays, which serve as sources for understanding and reinterpreting reality from multiple perspectives.

This year marks the anniversary of the Carnation Revolution, and the historical archive created by the artist takes on particular significance. It brings together documentation linked to a date that profoundly shaped Portugal's history and has become a symbol of freedom. The exhibition's very title, posed as a question – “Archive or Kaleidoscope?” – contrasts the traditional concept of an archive, associated with the preservation and organisation of historical records, with the kaleidoscope. This object allows one to see beautiful images formed by the reflection of light within its faceted interior. The kaleidoscope appears as a provocation, inviting visitors to reflect on the different ways of viewing and interpreting history.

Although the artist's sources are extensive, his selection is necessarily partial, reflecting a critical perspective that seeks to broaden the possibilities for interpreting reality. The question posed in the title remains open, inviting each visitor to engage with the newspapers and documents of the era in light of their own experiences and memories, thus transforming the exhibition into a living, personal archive.
